Tour of Historic Salem, MA

Saturday, November 2, 2013: Over 20 Fulbright Scholars and their families joined the ICW for a visit to the historic seaside town of Salem, MA, where the notorious witch trials of 1692 took place and today draws visitors from all over New England and the world for its combination of Halloween thrills and living monuments to American history. The day began with a visit to the House of Seven Gables, the oldest surviving 17th century wooden mansion in New England, and the inspiration for author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s legendary novel of the same name. Participants experienced local food and fare, and also visited the Peabody Essex Museum, home to the finest maritime art in the United States. The museum’s founders were among America’s first global entrepreneurs, traveling the world in search of trade and amassing collections of exceptional provenance, representing the art and culture of North America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
